Unless we start saving water, we’ll soon experience shortages in the near future. Having a clean supply of water is often taken for granted. Let’s not wait until there’s no water left before we start saving water.

Here’s a list of simple and easy ways to save water.

Check your toilet for any leak

If you have a toilet that leaks, you could well be wasting almost 100 gallons of water a day! So how do you check if your toilet is leaking?

Start by putting food coloring in your toilet tank. A few drops will do. Now, check your bowl. If you find that coloring starts to appear, you’ve got yourself a leak.

Switch to a low-flush toilet

An average household flushes the toilet at least 5,000 times in a year. But with the help of dual-flush systems, you can save large amounts of water. These kinds of toilets only use 1.5 gallons.

With a dual-flush system, you only use 1 gallon. This is a large difference to the old-style single flush toilets which use 3.5 gallons.

Turn off the faucet

Are you guilty of leaving the water on while you’re brushing your teeth? If yes, then you’ve got to start changing. What you can do is wet your brush and fill a glass with water for rinsing your mouth before you start brushing.

Aside from brushing, you should also make it a habit to not let the water run endlessly when you wash or rinse the dishes, shave, and wash your hands or face.

By doing this, you can save hundreds of gallons in a month!

dishwasher hacks

Only use your automatic dishwasher and automatic washing machine for full loads

Your automatic dishwasher uses around 25 gallons of water per cycle. It doesn’t matter if it’s a full load or not. The dishwasher will still use 25 gallons. On the other hand, the washing machine uses 30 to 35 gallons of water.

To avoid wasting water, only use your automatic dishwasher and automatic washing machine for full loads.

Shorten your showers

On average, taking a shower uses five to ten gallons of water per minute. So aim for less than five minutes of shower time. Simply soap up, wash down and rinse. You can even use a kitchen timer to help with your showers.

Another thing you can do with your shower is to switch to an efficient showerhead which allows you to lather up with less water. Not only are you saving on water but you’re also cutting your bills.

Take a bath

If you’re having a hard time shortening your shower time, it’s better to take a bath. A tub that’s partially filled uses less water than taking a shower.

Capture rainwater

If you have a garden, this is one of the best ways to save on water. Try to find ways to capture rainwater. Save and store it for garden usage. One thing you can try is to use a 55-gallon drum and catch rainwater from the downspouts and gutters. Be sure to cover the drum to keep mosquitoes at bay.
